Breast lift surgery corrects the shape and position of the breasts. This procedure is usually performed to enhance breasts that have become saggy or deflated due to the effects of pregnancy, aging, weight changes, or having oversized breasts or oversized implants. A breast lift improves the contour, shape, and position of the breasts and can also be combined with breast augmentation (referred to as a breast lift with augmentation) to further enhance the size, shape, and appearance of the breasts.
Ideal Candidates
- Are non-smokers
- Are physically healthy
- Have a positive outlook
- Have realistic expectations and goals
- Have sagging, pendulous breasts
- Have deflated breasts with diminished firmness
- Have downward-pointing nipples and areolas
The Procedure
Dr. Clark performs breast lift surgery using either the standard vertical lift or the Benelli lift.
Standard Vertical Lift
For significant breast sagging, the best results are achieved using the standard vertical lift. This option requires an incision around the areola and down to the breast crease to gather the skin of the lower breast. The incision and resulting scar are necessary to avoid creating a flat breast shape for women with significant breast sagging. The scar will fade nicely six to 12 months after surgery.
Circumareolar Lift (Benelli Lift)
For mild to moderate breast sagging, Dr. Clark can perform the Benelli lift, which leaves a scar only around the areola. In most cases, the scar will blend well with the edge of the areola, though the scar may become noticeable if it widens or hypertrophies. More tissue trauma occurs with this technique as the breast tissue is lifted and reshaped.
Recovery and Results
For a few weeks after surgery, you may experience some swelling, bruising, and breast tightness. Take pain medications and antibiotics, rest often, and engage in light activities like walking to encourage circulation. Patients are usually able to return to work after one week. Avoid exercise for six weeks. If you undergo a breast lift with augmentation, your implants will take a few months to soften and settle into their more natural and permanent position. As you heal, you will enjoy the improved appearance, firmness, shape, and position of your breasts. Your results should last a long time and boost your confidence and self-image.
